Then, tomorrow was another day... http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2008/07/then-tomorrow-was-another-day.html Yesterday I did a panel with Richard Price, and then I signed for (according to the newspapers)about six hundred people for five and a half hours. Normally I try very hard to be as nice to the people who've been waiting for hours as I was to the people at the beginning, but I think I may have been ordering the people at the back of the line around a bit just to make sure I finished before the Tom Stoppard talk started at seven. (I finished with 25 minutes to spare.) The crowd was lovely, and all amazingly good-humoured given how long they were standing around. Anyway. Five and half hours, which is about five hours and ten minutes longer than anyone else here, which meant that I was being peered at suspiciously, as if revealed as some kind of odd alien being, by other writers with whom only that morning I was sharing jokes and food. I think they have now forgiven me. After the Stoppard panel, which was marvellous, like a master class, (I'm typing this on the computer in the hotel lobby, and was just tapped on the shoulder by a Newspaper photographer who wanted me to come and pose for some shots, and seemed a bit baffled when I pointed out that I was working) I went to dinner with one of my Brazilian publishers. I hadn't really eaten since breakfast over twelve hours earlier, and discovered that when you are given a very large passionfruit caipirinha after a five and a half hour signing and on an empty stomach, you know it's working because your feet go numb. Possibly they simply went away. Luckily, my feet returned before I had to walk back to the hotel, but it was extremely odd. Today it's the end of FLIP and the Desert Island Books panel, and I will read a bit from James Thurber's The Thirteen Clocks. |

Salutations A member of this group suggested I check it out, and you folks seem like a like-minded community, so here I am.
I'm kinky, poly when my relationships are served by it, a predominantly woman-oriented woman (but man-friendly), a retired/recovering geek (having left computer industry careers), a gamer of various sorts (online, pc, console, and tabletop RPGs which are my favorite. I wrote for the old school RPG industry for a time, and still run a great game via email) And am a taoistically inclined eclectic pagan. So this seems the right place for me.
I'm a novelist and have sequestered myself at a long-term writer's retreat in The Hinterlands so I can get 2 books done. See my opening post on my home page for my freaking-out introduction about my writerly dilemmas and why I'm back in LJ land. So, I am leaving my location intentionally undefined. Suffice it to say I'm on a beautiful, quiet farm someplace rural, and pretty isolated except for online connections.
Huzzah.
Looking forward to the convos here.

Introductions Hi! *sheepishly sticks up hand*
Well, the comm. rules said to post an intro so here it is.. If you read, I hope you laugh, and if you are drinking while you laugh, don't snarf the drink. Bubbly drinks are bad for the sinuses and worse on the keyboard.
Bi: No, Curious maybe. Am friendly to those that are, of course.
Poly: Used to be, not anymore but am open to those that are.
Kinky: Depends on the situation, those involved and whether or not there are witnessess. ;)
Gamer: YES! Quake 3 is my weapon of choice, but I have Half Life, HL2, Unreal Tournament, and love online gaming. Recently got into WoW but the job thing has kept me away for a while. Other than that, if I haven't tried it' I'll give it a shot.. Let me reload first.
Geek: My gamer rig is "zeus" which features a 2 terabyte RAID array and a 50in plasma display and I just finished hacking Linux into a thinclient I bought at Goodwill for $10.
How did I find this group? I googled "happy pagan gamer geek chick" and this was one of the first links. (I'm serious!)
A little about me: Hmm. I'm a dirty old man, although I'm not really that old. and I currently live in Houston. I have a whip crack sense of humor and my mind is always in the gutter. I have been told that I should go into stand-up comedy, but I'd prefer to embarass myself online before I stand up in front of a crowd, although it's kinda the same thing except no one can throw tomatoes at you. :P |

With still a million things to say... http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2008/07/with-still-milion-things-to-say.html Today the Arcadian idyll turned into something an awful lot more like work. TV interviews all morning, press conference all afternoon. Oh well. Neil,I'm in Campinas-Brasil, and it's a 5-hours-car trip to Paraty. If I get there, most likely on Saturday, where can I find you since I don't have a ticket to Flip? I really, REALLY would love to have you sign one of books. I, like many in this sunny country am a major fan of yours. I REALLY love your books! And I'm dying to get my hands on Graveyard Book and Neverwhere...Thanks for the attention LiviaLet's see... first of all, you don't need a ticket for FLIP. You do need a ticket to get into the main tent where the authors are talking, or to sit down and watch the overflow screen -- but you can watch the interview without sitting down or listen from anywhere near where the big screen overflow place is. Richard Price and I will be talking at 11:45 am. As for signing, there will be a signing at about 1.00pm on Saturday in the signing area, which will undoubtedly go on for a while. We will probably have to limit the number of things I sign (so for heaven's sake don't hitchhike or drive carrying all the Sandman books plus another set for a dying friend -- they won't get signed. It will be two, maybe three things are most). I'll stop signing at 7.00pm when Tom Stoppard's talk starts, because I want to hear it. I'll also be on on Sunday at the DESERT ISLAND BOOKS panel at 5.00pm -- there's no signing planned after that, though. There may be more signing, there may not -- probably not, as the organisers haven't planned for it. I may sign stuff if you bump into me on the cobblestones or in the town square and ask nicely or just hold something out and smile (I have been so far, but it'll depend a bit on how many people try and whether I need to get from place to place) especially if you can do it without making it look like I've suddenly decided to do a signing in the street. |

[USA] Bi Personals Site Boots Trans Member as reported in Bay Windows by Ethan Jacobs staff reporter Wednesday July 2nd 2008 and UPDATED July 3 2008When Nick Teich created a free account on the online personals site BisexualDatingNow.com last week, he decided to disclose that he is transgender. Perhaps he shouldn’t have. "They say, tell us about yourself in your own words. And I stated, ’I’m a 25-year old trans guy living in Boston.’ . . . I didn’t want to mislead anyone looking at my profile, so that’s why I put that," said Teich. Within a day he had received three "smiles," which members send to express their interest in getting to know each other. Teich thought little of his decision until he wrote to the site’s customer service staff about a problem he was having using the site. He exchanged e-mails with a customer service representative named Kiar Dupuis, and after reading his profile Dupuis informed him that the site does not allow transgender users."I am sorry, as a transgender, our site would not meet your needs. I am afraid we have to remove your profile," wrote Dupuis, according to an e-mail provided to Bay Windows by Teich. His profile was deleted shortly after he received the e-mail. ( Click here to read more and to find out how to protest this - and PS TangoWire is a Gay owned and operated company!!!!! )we are x-posting this, we originally found this info on ftmichael's post on ourqueerfamily and neverbeuseless's post on gsa_lj but it's quickly spereading across the internet, it's now on "Pams House Blend" too. That'll get some action for sure! Current Mood: shockedCurrent Music: "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister |

Music! When I got home after a lovely dinner, I could hear some live music playing in the neighbourhood. Surprisingly it got louder the closer I got to my house (away from Queen Street), and it sounded really good! I dropped my things at the house and went for a wander to find the source, and met one of my neighbours out doing the same thing. It turned out to be a birthday party across the road from me - my neighbour went up to the gate and said hello, then waved me to come on in. The host introduced himself and his guests, including the 66-year-old birthday boy, gave us each a beer and welcomed us to stick around. :)
I stayed for a set and then wandered on home, but threw open the windows so I can still hear them pretty well. The band's quite good, they're called Donkey I believe, and they're playing at a place called the Grasshopper on Friday (pretty close to my workplace), so I think I'll go check them out again. It was nice to meet some music-loving neighbours too. :)
Quite a lovely evening! |

The morning found me miles away... http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2008/07/morning-found-me-miles-away.html Still in Brazil. Still with Miss Maddy. Still having a lovely time. Bought lots of books in the Paraty Festival bookshop today -- and saw many beautiful Brazilian editions of my stuff I hadn't seen before. My favourite article read on the plane, incidentally, was the wonderful The Magic Olympics -- with tricks explained! by Alex Stone, in Harpers, which you can read online at: http://harpers.org/archive/2008/07/0082095 (my second favourite was the Gopnik article on Chesterton in the New Yorker, but it's not online, and I think he missed the boat about Chesterton politically). [My mistake. The Harpers article is only readable for subscribers.] Hi Neil,You wrote a lovely story, told by Abel (I believe) about crows sitting in judgment on their storytellers. Somewhere along the way, this story became fact in my head. I was wondering if there is any truth to the myth, or if it's just myth. Maybe you could pass the question on to the Birdchick? Thanks!MRMThe description of corvids sitting around one of their number, cawing back and forth, and then sometimes killing it and sometimes flying off is something I've run into in old bird literature (and more recently as well -- since Sandman 40 came out I've read an eyewitness account of it in the Smithsonian Magazine). As to why it happens, I don't think you'll find any bird people who claim to know. I should mention that the collective noun for rooks is not a parliament (which is actually the collective noun for owls) or it wasn't until I wrote Sandman 40, anyway. Mostly it's a building or a clamour of rooks. Sometimes it's a storytelling of rooks, which sounds like something I might have made up anyway... Does Neil have an official myspace page? If so what is the adress? No, I don't. There's an unofficial one, or more than one out there. I keep meaning to set up official myspaces and facebooks, but really tend to feel that keeping this place under control is more than enough for one author, and it never happens. Hi Neil--Not really a question for you, just comment. You mentioned Tom Stoppard in your blog today. They say you should never meet your heroes, but they never say how cool it is when some of your heroes meet each other and get along so well. You seem to get along well with just about everyone. What just makes me smile is that so many of them are heroes of mine (Dave McKean, Roger Zelazny, Tom Stoppard, Philip Pullman,... ).Good luck growing up to be Mr. Stoppard. You seem well on your way.Have fun! GeoffActually, you should never meet your heroes if you want to keep them as heroes. They may wind up as friends or as disappointments or as pleasant surprises, but once you know them they immediately stop being heroes. (I've turned down several opportunities to meet Stephen Sondheim socially, because he's practically all I've got left. Even David Bowie, who I've never even met, has managed to transmute in my head most of the way from DAVID BOWIE ZOMG!!1!* to my friend Duncan's dad.) But then, I'm not sure about heroes at the best of times. I wrote about it at http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2004/10/whatever-happened-to-sancho-panza.aspand still feel pretty much the same way now. The most remarkable thing about Tom Stoppard (leaving aside the whole him-being-a-genius thing) is he's twenty years older than me, and he has my hair! This gives me hope. ....... *correct !!1! punctuation assistance here by Maddy. |

break time? I'm misreading "maps" as "apes". It does make the bug reports more interesting. I hermitted all weekend and tried to make my home less repulsive. Saturday I finally got my bike back, weeded the front yard, purged some crap from my house & picked up groceries. Sunday and Monday were mostly lost to net (got my ISC rating back up to 800!) and bad television. Bad food, too - made a couple of feeble efforts to clean up the kitchen but couldn't bring myself to cook in it. I settled for potato chips and takeout. Tuesday I got back in the game: planted seedlings & cleared the overgrown grape vines and berry bushes to make room for more vegetables. I also choked down some proper food - egg-white omelet with fresh herbs (saving the yolks for ice cream) in the morning, and a better class of takeout for lunch and dinner (burger and prime rib dinner from the Tulip). Now I'm dying for some human contact. Made plans for quick catch-ups with courtly today post-work and svan tomorrow. If the weather's nice on Friday I'll go to the pool after work, if not, maybe a movie. Hancock is out! Okay, I think I can read properly now. Back to it. Current Mood: so-so |

Suggestions for vacation ground rules? I have worked hard the last few months on the side to put together the funds so that two of my loves and a friend can do a nice vacation trip.
Now, while they do talk/play nice/etc at home, this will be the first real test of relation dynamics. I've tried to work up to it with dinners, movies, and other events over the last two months, all which went well. I hope to do larger vacations in the future with them and others as well, but now my concern.
I consider this vacation a true plunge test. It will be a few days, involve a four hour drive each way, and should go well. However, I've never had to deal with 'which one of us is right' disagreements over the last few years ergo never had to show favoritism (nor do I want to). But with pretty much everyone in a new environment (plus the heat of summer/car trip/etc), I am hoping for some thoughts and suggestions to consider.
I have many beautiful people in my life, but these two are the only ones right now I have set up shop with and have mutual investments and dealing with. But for us to move forward and grow, I felt we needed to do more together especially if I someday merge the houses. They both seem agreeable to the ideas, but proof is in the pudding.
There is a lot riding on this trip so I ask for your advice.
Thank you. |
