Report on the AOL closure rumors. Looks like it'll be the 8th.

One thing about this, my AOL working friends, is that I believe this kind of closure qualifies for WARN Act protection, meaning you will be given 60 days warning, or a lump severance of 60 days. I'm not sure how insurance will apply here, but at the very least you will be offered COBRA. It will be expensive because it will not have the employer subsity built in, but it will be worth it for some of you for reasons I'll take off the internet.

This year, the cleaning process will take place from 23:59 pm (GMT) on March 31st until 00:01 am (GMT) on April 2nd. During that 24-hour period, five powerful Internet-crawling robots situated around the world will search the Internet and delete any data that they find.

In order to protect your valuable data from deletion we ask that you do the following:

* 1. Disconnect all terminals and local area networks from their Internet connections.

* 2. Shut down all Internet servers, or disconnect them from the Internet.

* 3. Disconnect all disks and hardrives from any connections to the Internet.

* 4. Refrain from connecting any computer to the Internet in any way.

We understand the inconvenience that this may cause some Internet users, and we apologize. However, we are certain that any inconveniences will be more than made up for by the increased speed and efficiency of the Internet, once it has been cleared of electronic flotsam and jetsam.

Planes and cars

Packed this morning. I realised that I hate travelling. Actually, it's not that I mind it when I'm in the country, but I dread customs and immigration. As the time for me to go came closer, my stomache began to hurt more and more.

I decided to lend my car to X while I was gone. K and I drove over to her shop and left the car with her. We then went on to the airport where I flew off to the great white north to see my family. The stop over in Detroit was cool, even if the airport lacks any good food places. I hadn't been in the tunnel between concourse A and B & C before, and it was rather nifty with the lights on the walls timed to the music playing. There is also a fountain with jumping water that I had seen before. After checking in with K, I went to eat my burger by the gate.

I get to Ottawa and go through customs. No hassles, no problems. Guess it was much ado about nothing. I go outside and damn is it cold. I was dressed for the 102 degrees of JAX, but even so it shouldn't be this cold in midsummer even at night. This was more like spring weather. So I stand and wait for my sister to pick me up, and wait, and wait.

She doesn't show up. I call over and I guess she misunderstood our emails, thinking a friend of mine would get me. Her car is dead so she can't come. Said friend is in Rhode Island because his flight in was canceled. So I take a cab.

My sister and I talk for a bit and she heads to bed. Then my phone rings. It's X. I ask her how the concert was (one reason for my lending her the car was so she could go to a concert in Atlanta). She tells me she didn't go, she's still in JAX, and, well, my car's been in an accident. A drunk bitch swiped it while it was parked out in front of her house, hit and run, but she was caught.

Gr-fucking-reat.

X says she'll have it all dealt with. I have full body insurance, so that's okay. I hope I can sue the bitch for the deductible.

Sigh....

It is official. The i are dotted and the ts are cross, I'll be starting a new contract at Citistreet on the 6th. I had preferred Blue Cross, but they wanted to do another interview and things had gotten to a point that I either had to say "yes I'm going to Citi" or no. Since Blue Cross wasn't a sure thing, I don't think there was much of an option.

Still, Citi is good. It'll be a 4 month committment with probable extension. Plus, I don't have to change contracting firms, which is a pain.
